Thinking ahead...(when my Manley is restored).
Does anyone have sources for popcorn, preferably a high grade white popping corn? Will also need to purchase a scoop. Prefer a style I used in the 60's - a solid metal "V" shaped scoop. Thanks, oscar

Hi Oscar, I am no expert on this topic. But here is what I tried and it worked well for me. I understand that there are a couple of critical factors. One is the popcorn popper. You have solved that one with the Manley Popcorn machine. Quoting a Manley ad, “…engineered to pop corn most appetizingly, most efficiently.” A second factor is the oil that you pop it in. In the old days, coconut oil was used. There is some debate about the healthiness of coconut oil, but my understanding is that it is the best from a taste perspective. Second is the moisture content of the popcorn itself. A friend of mine does the Kettle Korn for profit. He buys his supplies from Sam’s Wholesale Club. Says that is a great combination of quality and price. However, Sam’s only sell 50 pound bags, and I believe that it is yellow corn. My friend actually throws away any leftover popcorn so that he can have fresh at the next event. So, try not to buy large quantities. Buy smaller quantities and keep it fresh.

Now, the 1.5 oz popcorn bag are a tremendous value at Sam’s.

I purchased some white popcorn and white coconut oil from snappy popcorn. There web site is:

http://www.popthis.com/index.html

Only have used them for one order, but I had very good luck with them. You can buy popcorn (white or yellow) in 2 and 4 pound bags. Thus you can keep the moisture content correct.

For the scoop, there appears to be a fair number of places to get one. Snappy has one, and I have seen several on eBay. Sam’s also has one:

I assume that is the type you are talking about. Apparently, there is a left and right hand version.

After restoring my machine, I found out that my Uncle was very much into popcorn. At one point in time he grew popcorn, but hasn’t in recent years. He has promised to get me some gourmet popcorn (he still has some connections) next growing season.

Maybe someone else can comment on the gourmet popcorn. Here is an interesting site with gourmet popcorn:

Ross.

Good evening Ross!
Thank you for the sources. Scoop offered by Sam's online is exactly what I wanted.

BTW, I know that there has been some discussion about Manley model numbers and serial numbers; have (or someone) initiated a "registry of Manley machine? I think that it would be informative if a registry database where created. It might help better define machine features and model numbers.
best regards,
oscar

Hi Oscar, a registry would be a fine idea. I would be happy to maintain it. What information should we collect? Any ideas on the type of database we should use? Ross.

Good evening Ross!
I don't know anything about what databases you might use; you'll have to ask someone else. In thinking about data fields, I think the following would be a start:
Model; SN; Kettle Type; Notable Features; Notes.
Notes would be a field where such info as where the machine was used (ie ??? theater) or other comments. Most of this info would easily come from model id plate and observations of the machine such as type kettle used.
best regards,
oscar
